Bending, stretching, twisting, cutting, and gluing: Topology studies all of these deformations and more! This semester we'll be exploring the notion of "continuous function'' in a wide variety of different settings. We'll see how to define it for abstract spaces and how the underpinnings of this definition allow us to prove theorems which are deceptively simple to state but notoriously difficult to prove. We'll see how much of topology can be developed in a setting amenable to actual computations and we'll explore how topology, through those computations, is relevant to a wide variety of scientific and mathematical questions.
