I.  Behind a noun:

• noun + と + predicate = with / in the company of
先生と話しました。I talked with my teacher.
 
※Other words to take this と are:  結婚する (marry)、けんかする (fight, quarrel)、似ている(resemble)、ちがう(different)、同じ (similar, the same) .
 
• noun + と + (いっしょに）+ predicate = with / in the company of
犬と(一緒に) 散歩しました。I took a walk with my dog.
 
※The verbs in this case do not have to be a special kind, so long as two people/beings can do something together.
 
• noun + と + noun (+ と + noun) = and
スミスさんは、英語と日本語とスペイン語が話せる。
    Smith-san can speak English, Japanese, and Spanish.

※ とlists things exhaustively.
※ The final とin the list is usually omitted.
 
• noun1 + と + noun2 (+ と + noun3) + どっち／どちら: choice, option
電車と車とどっちのほうが早いでしょうか。Which will be faster, a train or a car?
 
• noun1 + という + noun2 : noun 2 named/called noun1
鈴木さんという人が来ました。A person named Suzuki came.
 
※ といった (things like)、というような (something like) are variations.
 
• phonomime / phenomime / psychomime +と + predicate
スーッと立った。He got up swiftly but silently.
 
※ When the phonomime, phenomime, or psychomime is repeated, と may drop.
吉田さんは、スイスイ泳いだ。Yoshida-san swam with ease.
 
• 二度と + negative predicate = never again
彼女とは二度と口をききたくない。I don't want to talk to her ever again.
 

• verb-plain + と(いうことを) + 聞く:  quotation
神戸で地震があった と(いうことを) 聞きました。
    I heard that there was an earthquake in Kobe.
 
※ Other verbs to be used in this pattern are:  言う(say)、考える(think)、感じる(feel)、書く(write)、読む(read) and others.
※ というis used if the quoted information is second-hand.
※ て、って are the colloquial variations of this と.
 
• verb-plain + と + いい／困る
明日晴れるといいですね。It will be nice if the weather is good tomorrow.
そうですね。降ると困りますね。Indeed.  It will be a nuisance if it rains.

• verb-plain + と + predicate = if / when / as soon as: conditional
右へ曲がるとすぐ見えます。You can see it as soon as you turn right.
 
• verb-plain + と + predicate = whenever
毎朝起きるとまずテレビをつけます。
    He turns on the TV for the first thing every morning.
 
• verb-tentative + と + する = tried to do / just about to do
出かけようとしたら電話がかかってきました。
    Just as I was leaving home, the telephone rang.
 
• verb-tentative + と + verb-tentative + と = regardless / no matter . . .
雨が降ろうと、雪が降ろうと学校はあります。
    There are classes whether it rains or snows.

• verb-tentative + と + verb-まい + と = regardless / no matter . . .
彼女が来ようと来まいと、私は行きます。Whether she comes or not, I am going.
 
 

•  adjective-plain + と +  思う／言う／考える／感じる
あれはたしか安かったと思います。I believe it was cheap.

• な-adjective + だ (<--です）+ と +  思う／言う／考える／感じる: quotative
この帽子、きれいだと思いますか。Do you think this hat is pretty?

あっという間にいなくなりました。He disappeared in an instant.

※と may precede も、ばかり、だけ、でも、の、しか.
        父としか話しませんでした。I talked only with my father.

※とas a conjunctive does not connect sentences.  In order to link two sentences, そして、それから、. . . し are used.
        お店へ行きました、そして果物を買いました。I went to a store and bought some fruit.

• とlists everything, but や implies other things also.  Go to ya (や)
りんごとバナナがあります。There are applies and bananas.
りんごやバナナがあります。There are applies, bananas, and others.
 
• Compare the following:
彼女は先生と話した。 She talked with her teacher.
彼女は先生に話した。 She talked to her teacher.  Go to ni (に)
