- N + で = by means of something, by using something
ペンで書きました。
※The instrument cannot be a person.I wrote with a pen.
テレビで見ました。
- location + で = at, in, on (location of an activity)
図書館で勉強しました。
※The location of existence is shown by に.
タオルは食堂にあります。The towels are in the dining hall.
- Noun + で = among, between, within
富士山は日本で一番高い山です。
これは私たち二人でしました。
これとそれとではどっちがいいですか。Which would you prefer between this and that?
- price + で = for a certain amount of money
二万円で買いました。
- age + で = at the age of
二十才で結婚しました。
- amount of time + で = limit of time period
夏休みは八月で終わりです。
※The implication is that the vacation goes up to the end of August. If you wish to say "The vacation ends on August 31," you should use the particle に.
夏休みは八月三十一日に終わります。
- reason + で = for the reason that
病気で休みました。
火事で焼けました。- appearance + で = in the appearance of
裸足で来ないでください。
- これ、それ、あれ + で + いい = ・・・is all right
これでいいですか。
- これ、それ、あれ + で + は + だめです= ・・・is not all right
それではだめです。
※Some で are the -て form of 「だ」。In fact, some of the examples given here may be understood as such.
- だ／だった (= copula) + から or な／だった + ので (= conjunction) means "because" and defines the reason/cause more sharply than で. Go to kara (から)
病気でペーパーを書けませんでした。
Because (I) was ill, (I) could not write the paper.
病気だったからペーパーを書けませんでした。
病気だったのでペーパーを書けませんでした。- The present tense would be:
病気でペーパーを書けません。Because (I) am ill, I cannot write the paper.
病気だからペーパーを書けません。
病気なのでペーパーを書けません。- 「夏休みは八月で終わりです。」implies that summer vacation goes up to the end of August. If you wish to say "The vacation ends on August 31," you need the particle に. Go to ni (に)
