Jean Ewing's Scandal's Reward
Jean Ewing's Charles de Dagonet also quotes from a variety of
sources, using his mastery of Shakespeare and of popular
nineteenth-century texts to keep the heroine and his own murky past
at a distance. He even denigrates his love while offering it by
noting, with As You Like It, that "love is merely a madness and
deserves a dark house and a whip as madmen do" (Ewing 247),
neatly explaining his "mad" behavior throughout the novel.
Thus he gives the heroine a way out for her detemination, also
Shakespearean, to be his "war-like mate" (Ewing 246).
