Change, Probability, and Numbers Topics in the Mathematics of the Eighteenth Century
Change, Probability, and Numbers is a component in a cluster of
courses that form the Enlightenment and Revolution
integrated semester. This course focuses on the Mathematics of the middle
to late eighteenth century, encompassing both the golden years of the
scientific academies established by "enlightened monarchs" and the period
of the French revolution.
I gave a talk describing this course at a special session in a regional
meeting of the AMS; here are the notes from the
talk (in dvi format). The course materials that can be put online are
below.
Note that, to avoid clustering assignments, the due date for your
final paper has been changed to Thursday, December 18. Your
paper should be turned in by 5:00pm that day.
