Because the name Longstaff is a fairly common vocational name, there may have been Longstaffs living throughout the British Isles, although most Longstaffs seem to have come from the counties of Durham and York and more specifically from the region of Teesdale and Weardale. Carole A. M. Johnson (you will find a link to her web pages under "Related Pages" in the menu to the left) has made the book, The Langstaffs of Teesdale and Weardale, available on-line. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone researching Longstaff family history. (The circle to the left will also connect you to a search engine that will help you to locate addresses in the United Kingdom.)

Our ancestors once lived in the market town of Morpeth in Northumberland. We have traced our branch of the family back to the late 18th century, to Thomas Longstaff who was married to Jane Reed and Thomas Willis, who was married to Dorothy Nicholson. By the mid-nineteenth century our ancestors had moved south to Gateshead, then to Lancashire and finally to Lincoln. Several family members migrated to the United States and at least one (Thomas Richmond Willis Longstaff) went to Australia. We welcome email, especially from those whose who have ancestors in common with us.
