Just Beyond Reason

Poems by Patrick Brancaccio

For Ruth

We Came Down from the Trees

We came down
from the trees
and met
in the clearing
every day to talk
and carve
a knife
a fork
a spoon
a cup
a bowl.

We planned our meals. After eating
I scraped the bowl
cup spoon fork
and knife clean
and set them
in the sun
to dry.

One day
you took your vine
and swung
into another tree
and came down
with another
friend.

I took the dishes
and went out
of the clearing.
hid in the bushes
watching and dreaming
of all the dishes
still missing
rom our set
of all the
bread unbaked
in the cold ashes.

I took my book
walked deeper
into the forest
and sat under
the tallest tree
and read
and starved
to death.
