Just Beyond Reason

Poems by Patrick Brancaccio

For Ruth

The Ballad of Nick and Bart

O Niccolo , Bartollomeo
What did you do and why?
Anarchist, Wop, and Dago,
Look me in the eye.

What kind of trick were you playing
With that fine Eyetalian hand?
The Wasp ladies were tickled
And gave lessons they never planned.

It was the year that the Babe socked sixty
And Lindy flew Louis to France,
Nick and bart crowds hollered
As the guards shot the juice through their pants.

Poets went off to the mountains,
The ladies went home and cried,
But the poetry in their pockets
Was all that was left when they died.
