Just Beyond Reason

Poems by Patrick Brancaccio

For Ruth

  Montecitorio, 16 May, 1925

Gramsci,
after making
his first speech
attacking fascism
stopped at the bar
for coffee.
Mussolini
it is said
approached
hand extended
to felicitate him
on his discourse.
Gramsci
ignored the hand
and sipped
his coffee.
He was tired.
The Roman summer
provoked
insomnia.
