Just Beyond Reason

Poems by Patrick Brancaccio

For Ruth

Loud's Island August, 1972 (for Bill and Sylvia Wees)

Bill
making breakfast
cooking
for the kids
three of mine,
three of his,
and Darmon
one
of the Meaders' three.

On the refrigerator,
a little chart
each day someone
else's turn to make
breakfast. Friday
Michael wants pancakes
so Bill fries
Michael stirs
everybody spills syrup
on the red checkered
plastic
tablecloth.

Sylvia picks grasses,
herbs, weeds
edible and aromatic
liverwort rosehips
raspberries blueberries
(tough tight ones
left after the main picking )
for pancakes.

The fog rolls in --
We stay another day
I read about sea urchins
in The Maine Times
I learn their
gonads are eaten
on Italian bread
by California
immigrants
who brought
the taste with
them from the
Mediterranean.

That night
a neighbor
comes in
to report
the local
gossip
trouble
at the church
"and Otis Dexter
I wont go to church
while he stays on the island.
He says my pig-
tails
turn him on."

Before bed
I leaf through
Culture and Personality
and find
"Is the Oedipus
Complex Universal?
A Study of the Nuclear
Family in Southern
Italy "
Freud -- Malinowsky
controversy
Southern Italians
it turns out
are more
Elektral
than Oedipal.
Are Neapolitans
Tobriand Islanders?
Never mind.
