Just Beyond Reason

Poems by Patrick Brancaccio

For Ruth

  To Linus

You had a hot time of it --
A heat wave before --
A very long two weeks before --
And two weeks after:
An old time Manhattan burner --
Hot soles sticking to the asphalt
Like so many acres of gum --
Un veritable canicule --
That's French for heat wave --
You'll learn several languages soon
Just like your sister who right now
Knows Danish -- a long song
About two cows in a meadow
Who meet a very mysterious cat --
And a greeting in Italian she learned
Last summer -- Ciao, Ciao, Ciao.

Yes, it's hot with no end in sight.
Still you're a cool kid, Linus,
Checking out the scene
With alert, intense looks,
Or chomping noisily at your mother's,
Breast, or sleeping with those long arms,
Pianist's fingers, and curled legs,
Putting on those wonderful ounces.

But the question remains, Linus.
What are you going to be?
Where will you fit in with
The fabulous five ? With the lively
Wild ones -- Madeleine, Sam, Sister
Stella -- Stella of the long, imaginative
Phone monologues and overhand
Football passes -- reading, reciting,
Improvising -- hard act to follow!
But hold it -- maybe she won't be
The only star on the bill--
Maybe just a warm-up act
Because one thing I can see
About you, kid,
You're super cool,
A Real Scene Stealer.
