Just Beyond Reason

Poems by Patrick Brancaccio

For Ruth

  All This Blue for Harriett Matthews

All this blue, it is not mine:
the sky, the sea, the eye of God.

All this white, it is not mine:
the sails, the walls, the gliding doves.

All this gold, it is not mine:
the rings, the crowns, the burning sun.

All these stones, they are not mine:
marble, pumice, agate, slate.

All these gods, they are not mine;
Artemis, Apollo, icon saint.

All this time, it is not mine:
Minos, Hellas, Venice, Turk.

Mine the wind, and mine the surf,
Mine the journey, mine the dream.
