Sound from The Bacchae by Euripides

During preshow, rather than playing music, we used this subtle, unsettling noise; played just loud enough to be heard, but soft enough to ignore; it was meant to be tuned out, but have a subliminal impact on the audience's psyche. This is only an excerpt of what would have been playing for roughly 30 minutes as the audience gathered for the performance.

The following cue was used to emphasize an important entrance from the back of the house, featuring a messenger telling us of the horrific dismemberment (of Pentheus) he has just witnessed. The actor's delivery began with a stricken wailing that blended seamlessly with the ending of this cue.
